Correlation coefficients are not additive, so it is invalid to average them directly; they need to be transformed into the Fisher Z value to give[{\rho _{ij}}\, = \,\tanh \left [{\left({{{\tanh }^{ - 1}}{R_{ij}}\, + \,{{\tanh }^{ - 1}}{r_{ij}}} \right)/2} \right]. \eqno(3.8.3)]
